The 125th edition of the U.S. Open Golf Championship officially began on Thursday, June 12, at the historic Oakmont Country Club. A total of 156 players will take to the course in pursuit not only of the prestigious United States Open Championship Trophy but also a highly lucrative prize purse worth millions of dollars.
The United States Golf Association (USGA) recently announced that the prize fund for this year’s U.S. Open will total $21.5 million, with a staggering $4.3 million going to the winner. This marks a significant milestone, as for the second consecutive year, the tournament will offer the largest purse on the PGA Tour. While other major championships come close, none have matched the financial rewards of the U.S. Open.
To put this in context: this year’s Masters Tournament offered a $21 million purse, with Rory McIlroy taking home $4.2 million. The PGA Championship featured a $19 million prize pool, with champion Scottie Scheffler earning $3.42 million.
“We didn’t raise our purse this year. When I started at the USGA just four years ago, our purse was $12.5 million, so I feel comfortable that we’ve been a leader in moving fast and bigger,” said USGA CEO Mike Whan at a press conference on Wednesday. “We know that this probably isn’t really about the money for the person who wins, but at the same time, we want the money to be commensurate with the achievement.”
U.S. Open Golf Championship: How Many Are Truly in Contention?
That’s a tough question to answer. Historically, of the 1,385 players who have had the opportunity to compete in the U.S. Open, only about 2% have managed to finish under par across all four rounds. This statistic underscores the tournament’s notorious difficulty. Precision, unwavering focus, and perhaps a touch of luck will be essential for any player aspiring to claim victory.
An Exponential Rise in U.S. Open Prize Money
The U.S. Open has seen a remarkable increase in prize money over the past four years, with earnings for the champion rising by $2.14 million in that span. Here’s a breakdown of the winner’s share in recent years:
- 2020: $2.16 million – Winner: Brooks Koepka

- 2022: $3.15 million – Winner:Matt Fitzpatrick

Will we see a repeat performance from these contenders, or will new names rise to the top and claim the most coveted spots in one of golf’s most demanding championships?
