The relationship between ex-Cleveland Cavaliers star Tristan Thompson and Khloe Kardashian has experienced many twists and turns, from public scandals to moments of healing and renewed trust.

These days, their connection is grounded less in romance and more in family, especially after tragedy struck the Thompson household last year.

In January 2023, the sudden loss of Tristan’s mother, Andrea, brought seismic changes. Her passing left 18-year-old Amari Thompson, who lives with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, facing a world that now required even more care and attention.

Amari’s condition, a severe form of epilepsy, means he needs round-the-clock support and stability.

Two pillars of support

Into this space stepped Khloe Kardashian and Kris Jenner, who became pillars of strength for Amari. Their commitment went beyond simply providing comfort.

With two full-time caregivers and a blended support network, they made sure Amari was surrounded by love and consistency, even as life changed around him.

Experts in pediatric care often note the critical role of a solid support system for families managing complex medical conditions.

Amari’s journey was recently on full display when he took part in a dance recital on May 24, performing to ABBA’s “I Have a Dream” and “Take a Chance on Me.” For the Thompson family, it was a milestone event, one that symbolized resilience and hope.

Although Tristan Thompson could not be there due to NBA playoff commitments, he recognized the importance of the occasion and everyone who supported Amari.

“It was great with Khloe and the family and my kids being able to be there to support,” Thompson shared with PEOPLE, emphasizing how much the presence of loved ones means at critical moments.

He went on to explain why he missed the event: “I was in the playoffs, so I wasn’t able to make it, but him having loved ones and family members in the audience cheering for him, he’s a lucky guy.”

His remarks highlighted the reality faced by many professional athletes, who must often balance family responsibilities with career demands.

Khloe Kardashian’s unwavering commitment to Amari

Khloe Kardashian has shown time and again that her role in the Thompson family transcends her former relationship with Tristan. When Amari’s recital arrived, she made sure his achievements were celebrated.

Through social media, she shared videos of Amari’s performance, posted encouraging messages like “Proud of you,” and thanked her blessings.

After Andrea Thompson’s passing, Tristan Thompson became Amari’s legal guardian at just 34 years old, taking on the duty of guiding his younger brother through challenging times.

Despite ending her relationship with Tristan in 2021, Khloe Kardashian never wavered in her support for Amari, even hosting his 18th birthday at Tristan’s Hidden Hills estate last summer.

Season 6 of The Kardashians offered fans a closer look at that birthday celebration, which took a scary turn when Amari experienced a seizure.

The emotional weight of the moment was not lost on anyone present, especially Kris Jenner, who later said, “You feel helpless when someone is having a seizure and it’s uncontrollable and there’s nothing that you could really do, but I’m glad I was here. I’m glad I was here for Amari. I’m glad I was here for Khloé.”

Jenner also praised her daughter’s strength, noting how “proud” she was of Khloe for being “so brave” throughout such a challenging time. These experiences have only deepened the sense of unity between the Kardashian and Thompson families.

Looking forward, Tristan Thompson and Khloe Kardashian continue to prioritize Amari’s well-being. Their journey together is a testament to the idea that families can be built through empathy, determination, and unconditional support, even after romantic love has faded.

In doing so, they set an example for how to care for each other in times of change and adversity.
