Tiger Woods has pleaded guilty to reckless driving and refusing to submit to a legal test after the accident in Jupiter earlier this year. The 50-year-old megastar has accepted a 5-year suspension of his driver’s license and a $1,000 fine. The charges that could have led to prison have been dropped. If he is stopped again while driving, he will go to jail immediately.
He had initially pleaded not guilty, but had to appear in person after filing a motion to change his plea. Tiger was arrested on March 27 by Florida city police officers, accused of driving under the influence of alcohol with property damage and of refusing to take a breathalyzer test after the accident that occurred on South Beach Road. Woods was then issued a traffic fine for careless driving of $163.
His Land Rover crashed into a trailer traveling in the opposite direction and overturned in the middle of the roadway. Woods got out of the vehicle under his own power. When the officers arrived, he refused to take the breathalyzer test and said he had not consumed alcohol. When asked whether he was taking medication, he said yes, and two hydrocodone pills, a powerful painkiller, were found in his pockets.
Taken to the police station, Tiger underwent a breathalyzer test to measure his blood alcohol level. The test returned a result of 0.00 on two occasions. A blood alcohol level of 0.08 or higher is considered illegal in the United States.
