Golf legend Tiger Woods has broken his silence following a high-profile rollover car accident and DUI arrest, announcing that he is stepping away from the public eye to focus on his health and seek treatment.
In a statement posted Tuesday evening, Woods acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and emphasized his commitment to personal recovery, both on and off the golf course.
The 50-year-old, widely regarded as one of the greatest golfers of all time, did not shy away from the gravity of the events.
“I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today,” Woods wrote. “I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.
“I’m committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally. I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time.”
The message is Woods‘ first detailed public remarks since a March 27 rollover crash on Jupiter Island, Florida, where he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
According to law enforcement reports, Woods‘ SUV struck another vehicle before flipping onto its side. Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported. Authorities later observed signs of impairment and took him into custody.
At the scene, deputies noted that Woods appeared lethargic and exhibited physical signs suggesting impairment. A Breathalyzer test showed 0.000 alcohol, but he declined a urine test, leading to DUI charges that also include property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test.
Investigators reportedly found prescription pills, believed to be hydrocodone, in his possession, and field sobriety exercises were unsuccessful.
While the legal process unfolds, Woods has pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to appear in court next month, this incident inevitably draws attention to past troubles for the golf icon, including a 2017 DUI arrest and severe injuries from a separate crash in 2021.
Turning point for a sports icon
Woods‘ decision to step back and prioritize treatment comes at a time when he was already working to maintain his competitive edge despite ongoing physical challenges.
Supporters have expressed understanding and encouragement, recognizing the difficulty of the moment for the golfing legend. As Woods takes this pause, the spotlight shifts from controversy to recovery.
