The rest of August must be near-perfect
A year after playing in the World Series and losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Yankees currently hold the third Wild Card spot, trailing the Seattle Mariners and Boston Red Sox, with a 62-56 record in 2025.
Under this scenario, while the Cleveland Guardians are right behind them with a 61-56 record, a single misstep this month could see the Yankees lose their postseason berth, which would be a resounding failure for the franchise.
A lot has changed. At one point in the season, the Yankees comfortably led the American League East with a seven-game advantage, but everything has shifted with the resurgence of the Toronto Blue Jays, who now boast a 69-50 record.
The American League may be facing a tough moment, as the National League holds the best record in MLB, led by the Milwaukee Brewers, followed closely by the Philadelphia Phillies and Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Yankees need to improve in many areas. While their bullpen has significantly strengthened with the arrival of Pittsburgh Pirates closer David Bednar, their starting rotation is now struggling.
Additionally, the errors by shortstop Anthony Volpe, who leads the majors with 16 errors, highlight a broader issue, as several players have faltered defensively, making it a weak point for the team.
If the Yankees want to return to the World Series, they need to improve-a lot-in what will be a decisive August.
