Japan’s quest to defend its international baseball crown ended in dramatic fashion, triggering a surprising leadership decision within the team. Following the quarterfinal elimination at the World Baseball Classic, Japan manager Hirokazu Ibata reportedly chose to step down, taking personal responsibility for the team’s unexpected defeat.

Venezuela comeback stuns Japan
The turning point came when Maikel Garcia launched a two-run homer that cut Japan’s lead and sparked Venezuela’s rally. Not long after, Wilyer Abreu delivered a crucial three-run blast that suddenly flipped the scoreboard and handed Venezuela a 7-5 advantage.

In the aftermath, Ibata reportedly addressed the defeat with blunt honesty, emphasizing that results ultimately define a manager’s success. Taking full responsibility for the loss, he chose to step aside from his role in a rare act of accountability at the international level.
Ibata had taken charge of Japan in October 2023 and quickly achieved success, leading the team to victory in the Asia Professional Baseball Championship later that year. However, the pressure that accompanies managing Japan’s national team is immense, especially after entering the tournament as defending champions.
