Not long ago, to be precise, two months ago, the New York Mets were one of the best teams in all of MLB, sitting atop the National League East. They were even on track to have one of the best records in the franchise’s history, but an unprecedented losing streak has put them in a precarious situation.

Now, Carlos Mendoza‘s team has not only lost the division lead but also faces the possibility of missing the postseason altogether.

A losing streak reminiscent of the 2017 Dodgers

The latest loss to the Atlanta Braves leaves the Mets with a 64-57 record, five games behind the Philadelphia Phillies in the East. This downward spiral began on July 28, as they’ve gone 2-13 since then.

Carlos Mendoza‘s squad has lost 13 of their last 15 games, making them the second team in MLB history to have such a record after holding the best mark in June or later, according to OptaSTATS. The other team with this record was the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2017.

If it’s any consolation, those Dodgers went on to win the National League pennant that year, so it could be said that not all hope is lost for the Mets.

The Mets are considered the ideal team for the next Japanese superstar Munetaka Murakami

The New York team is entering critical weeks if they want to secure a spot in the postseason. They are currently in the Wild Card race, just 0.5 games behind the Cincinnati Reds.
