The outlook for the Mets’ future in the 2026 season is confusing. Their signing strategy is indecipherable and little understood. Analysts and experts are questioning what is going through David Stearns’ mind to maneuver as he has done this offseason. Now he has signed Vidal Brujan, a player who was not on any team’s radar as a candidate to strengthen and who has a career with more lows than highs.

Stearns, the franchise’s chief operating officer, reached a financial agreement with the Twins to trade the player. It was undoubtedly an unexpected and puzzling move. With the departures of Pete Alonso, Edwin Diaz and Brandon Nimmo, the Mets were expected to go after players of that caliber in the market, but they have not done so. Except for the signing of Bo Bichette, the organization is betting on players considered to be “low cost”.

After trading Luisangel Acuña as part of a package for Luis Robert Jr., the New York franchise acquired Vidal Brujan from Minnesota in exchange for cash considerations. The goal of his signing is to cover the depth of the infield. Of all the options with his profile within reach, he is the one who attracted the Mets. It remains to be seen next season why he was chosen.

The 27-year-old played for three teams in 2025, posting a combined .616 OPS in 60 games, split between the Cubs, Orioles and Braves. To open a roster spot for the second baseman, left-handed pitcher Richard Lovelady was designated for assignment.

Vidal was claimed off waivers by the Twins from Atlanta a week ago and must go through waivers again to be sent back to the minors. He has played in parts of five major league seasons and played 102 games with the Marlins in 2024.

The annoyance in the Mets fans

The team’s fans are still angry that Pete Alonso, one of their great idols in recent times, left. Resigned to his departure, they demanded that the front office sign elite players who were free agents in the offseason. One of their wishes was Kyle Tucker, but he went to the Dodgers.

They also asked for Cody Bellinger, who finally signed with the Yankees. Their requests have been ignored and the team continues with a low-profile hiring policy to strengthen the squad. With Vidal Brujan, fans question that an inconsistent player was chosen, who is not consistent and has unimpressive numbers.
