There is no doubt that among the available head coaching vacancies, the New York Giants’ job was one of the most attractive, especially because they believe they have found the perfect quarterback to help revive the franchise in Jaxson Dart. It is worth remembering that the Giants have only made the playoffs twice since 2012, the year they won the Super Bowl against the New England Patriots.
The two playoff appearances since then came in 2016, when the Giants were eliminated in the Wild Card round by the Green Bay Packers, and in 2022, led by Daniel Jones, when they defeated the Minnesota Vikings in the first round before falling in the Divisional Round to the Philadelphia Eagles led by Jalen Hurts.
After that 2022 season, the Giants endured three forgettable seasons, which ultimately cost Brian Daboll his job, as he was fired in Week 10 of last season. Now, the Giants are once again optimistic after hiring the best available head coach: John Harbaugh, who spent 18 seasons with the Baltimore Ravens and won a Super Bowl.
Giants could lean toward defense in the upcoming Draft
Given what we have seen and the excitement surrounding Jaxson Dart, many believe the team should give him as many weapons as possible to help him break out in his second year. Dart will benefit from the return of star wide receiver Malik Nabers, after general manager Joe Schoen confirmed he will be ready for training camp. Cam Skattebo is also expected to return, which is great news for Dart and the offense.
The Giants hold the fifth overall pick in the upcoming Draft, and one of the fan favorites is Carnell Tate, the dynamic wide receiver from Ohio State. However, John Harbaugh appears to have other plans in mind, as he is reportedly looking to strengthen the defense, which is clearly the team’s most pressing need.
One player who has emerged in recent hours as a potential target for the Giants is Caleb Downs, a safety from Ohio State. This is what John Harbaugh had to say: “You need a more athletic kind of guy. You need a guy that can run, but at the same time can get in there and tackle. Those guys are becoming as valuable as and more valuable than the so-called Glamour Positions.”
It is clear that fans want more weapons for Jaxson Dart, but the secondary desperately needs help. It is the weakest unit on the roster, and a player like Caleb Downs could be a perfect fit for the Giants’ new project. Therefore, it would not be surprising to see the Giants focus on defense with their first-round draft pick.
