The Los Angeles Dodgers continue building a competitive roster that keeps them among the MLB favorites – both in the short term and long into the future. To that end, they’ve executed a strategic trade that could pay major dividends down the road.
As they’ve done successfully before, the Dodgers once again appear to have come out ahead in this deal, acquiring a high-upside prospect who could eventually develop into an ace-level pitcher within their pitching staff.
In return, Los Angeles sent speedy outfielderEsteury Ruiz to the Miami Marlins.
The Return: A Young Arm
According to MLB insiderFrancys Romero, the Dodgers will receive Adriano Marrero, an 18-year-old Cuban right-handed pitcher originally signed by the Marlins in January for a $350,000 signing bonus.
After signing, Marrero logged 33 innings in the Dominican Summer League, striking out 35 batters and leaving strong early impressions with his arm talent and projection.
This represents an appealing return for a player like Ruiz, whom the Dodgers did not view as a core piece in their current major-league structure.
Ruiz stole 67 bases in the MLB with the Oakland Athletics in 2023, but his overall impact at the big-league level has been limited in recent seasons.
Marrero, of course, remains several years away from the majors.
That said, the Dodgers’ farm system features deep upper-level talent, allowing the organization to invest in young pitchers with high upside and develop them patiently.
In time, it wouldn’t be surprising to look back and conclude that Los Angeles extracted tremendous long-term value from this MLB trade.
