A rumor regarding wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk’s departure is gaining momentum. It is said that he no longer wants to remain with the San Francisco 49ers and would instead prefer to reunite with his former college teammate.
In Washington, they are aware that the powerful and talented receiver would like to catch passes from Jayden Daniels again, and that has already become a tempting prospect for the Commanders.
However, there is a significant obstacle to making this situation a reality. Aiyuk is still under contract with the 49ers for the next three years. It is worth remembering that he signed a four-year, $120 million extension in 2024.
It seems unlikely, but perhaps the West Coast franchise could be willing to part ways with the receiver, according to ESPN reporter John Keim.
Brandon Aiyuk dreams of reuniting with Jayden Daniels
According to Keim, the Washington Commanders have been in discussions about acquiring Aiyuk during this offseason, and he would fit perfectly as a complement to their top target, Terry McLaurin.
There was also speculation that they had pursued wide receiver Romeo Doubs before he signed with the New England Patriots. According to a source, that interest would have materialized if he had reached free agency.
For Aiyuk, things have not gone as planned. In the middle of the 2024 season, he suffered tears to both his ACL and MCL, which also caused him to miss the entirety of the 2025 season. The team placed him on the reserve list in December 2025.
Additionally, according to ESPN’s Nick Wagoner, this move came after the team voided $27 million in guarantees in his contract for 2026 because he skipped rehabilitation sessions.
I think it’s safe to say that he’s played his last snap with the Niners. It’s unfortunate. A situation that just went awry. And I will look long and hard at what could have been done differently, but sometimes it just doesn’t work out. And I think that this was a case where that happened.
Said San Francisco general manager John Lynch.
A release from the franchise could be more likely than a trade. The relationship between both sides appears to be broken.
Aiyuk’s numbers with the San Francisco 49ers
During his time with the 49ers, Brandon Aiyuk recorded the following statistics:
- 294 receptions
- 4,305 yards
- 25 touchdowns
- 69 games played
- 1,000 yards in 2024
- 1,342 yards in 2023, the highest total of his career
Now, it appears that his departure from the 49ers could be announced soon, potentially leading him to the nation’s capital to join the Commanders.
