When people think of LeBron James, gift giving is rarely the first thing that comes to mind. Over the years, James has developed a reputation for being careful with money, a trait that stands out even more given his enormous wealth.
But that reputation often misses the bigger picture. James does give. He just does it differently.
Radio personality Craig Carton recently revisited the subject and offered an explanation that pulled back the curtain on how James operates.
“I looked back, and I was wondering, ’cause I honestly didn’t remember, one way or the other could have been. Did LeBron ever buy teammates a gift? And the answer is yes,” Carton said. “With the catch, though. LeBron only gave out gifts from companies that he was a spokesman or ambassador for. In my language, that means he didn’t buy the gifts.
“So, for example, he’s a global ambassador for a fine clothing company called Thomas Brown. They do really nice suits and vests and all that stuff, right? So, he got everybody on the team, where I think when he was in Cleveland, he did it. He got them all suits.
“The second thing he got. He’s a spokesperson for Samsung. It’s a little bit better. Even though he got them for free, everybody got a Samsung phone.”
For some fans, that explanation reinforced the idea that James is overly calculated. For others, it highlighted something else entirely. Even when giving, James thinks long term, blending generosity with the same business sense that has defined his career off the court.
Big moments bring bigger gestures
While James often avoids holiday gifting, he has shown time and again that he knows when to open his wallet. Those moments tend to come when the stakes are highest.
One of the clearest examples came in 2015 during his second stint with Cleveland. Ahead of the NBA Finals, James bought every Cavaliers teammate an Apple Watch.
It was not a Christmas gesture or a publicity move. It was a statement about preparation and unity. Before handing out the watches, he hosted a team gathering with food, music, and even a barber so players could freshen up together. The Cavaliers went on to make another Finals appearance, and the moment became part of the team’s shared memory.
More recently, James made headlines after returning from the Paris Olympics with a gold medal for Team USA. He reportedly spent around $400,000 hosting a lavish dinner for the Lakers roster and staff, complete with fine wine and luxury gifts.
“This kind of dinner makes a group stronger, makes the team united, and he did a fantastic job organizing,” a player told U.S. Sun. “Our team captain, a leader who hosts such a luxurious team and staff dinner, with fantastic food and wines to get us together and unite the group as the season starts.”
