Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham found herself at the center of renewed discussion around Paige Bueckers and league officiating earlier this week after a playful, but pointed exchange with a fan on social media.

What started with a lighthearted TikTok comeback quickly drew attention back to ongoing conversations about how referees are calling games in the WNBA and how that intersects with the rising profile of the Dallas Wings‘ rookie star.

On January 15, Cunningham posted a clip from a 2025 game in which she and teammate Chloe Bibby stripped the ball away from Bueckers, and Cunningham danced into the lane for a layup.

In the comments, a TikTok user suggested the play “kinda looks like a foul,” prompting Cunningham, known for her fiery, unfiltered personality, to shoot back with: “I’ll show you what a foul REALLY is.”

Cunningham has repeatedly been fined by the WNBA this season for public commentary about officials, and at least one of those fines has been linked directly to her remarks about how referees have handled calls involving Bueckers.

Earlier in the 2025 season, the league fined Cunningham $500 for a TikTok video in which she lip-synced lyrics from Sabrina Carpenter‘s “Manchild,” appearing to call some officials “stupid,” “slow,” or “useless,” and tagged “@ some refs”.

Cunningham‘s criticism didn’t stop there. On the July debut of her “Show Me Something” podcast, she openly questioned officiating, saying “they’re just so inconsistent” and expressing frustration with how certain straightforward calls were being handled. That led to a larger fine of $1,500 from the league.

In a later episode that directly touched on a game with Bueckers, Cunningham said: “I love Paige to death … I think she’s a hell of a player and would love to play with her one day, but those refs were giving her every freaking whistle last night. Like you literally couldn’t touch her. If you’re going to do that, then give it to our guards.”

The WNBA handed her a third fine, which she described on the podcast by saying she was “officially 3for3 on being fined by the WNBA… They didn’t like my comments on Paige Bueckers.”

Paige Bueckers‘ response

When asked about the officiating debate and Cunningham‘s remarks before a game against the Los Angeles Sparks, Bueckers took a calm stance: “Everyone is entitled to their own unique personal opinion.”

That levelheaded response typifies how Bueckers, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft and a frontrunner for Rookie of the Year, has navigated her now high-profile first season.

Her play, averaging strong scoring and assist numbers for the Wings, has made her one of the league’s most talked-about players, a situation that naturally brings increased attention to how officials manage physicality and contact in her games.

Analysts have noted that rising stars often invite more scrutiny from all sides, including conversations around foul calls and protective officiating.
