The Italian returned to training last Thursday in New York, alongside Argentine Francisco Comesana, after two days of rest and hopes to be fit for his US Open debut on Tuesday, August 26.

The world number one’s first opponent will be Czech Vit Kopriva. It should be remembered that Sinner is the reigning US Open champion and an early elimination or victory for Carlos Alcaraz would see him lose the ATP crown at the end of the tournament

In his first public appearance at Flushing Meadows, the Italian spoke of the promise he made to his parents: “I told them that if at 23 or 24 years old I was not in the top 200 I would stop playing because we could not afford so much expense with the money we had.”
Sinner went through an ordeal last year when he arrived in the Big Apple. Just days before, his positive test for clostebol in Indian Wells was revealed: “It was a stressful situation. It was not an easy situation to deal with.”
