Simone Biles has shown glimpses of her recent escape to the British Virgin Islands, sharing a snapshot that quickly caught the attention of fans and fellow athletes.

The 28-year-old gymnast, who recently shined at the 2025 ESPY Awards, posted a yacht-side photo on Instagram that radiated confidence and relaxation and it earned a response from Serena Williams that instantly went viral.

In the image, Biles posed in a black string bikini with playful polka-dot bottoms while standing on the deck of a yacht. Her caption, “god forbid a girl uses her passport,” carried her signature blend of humor and ease.

The post racked up thousands of likes within hours, but it was Serena Williams’ brief comment, a simple “Ughhh”, that summed up what much of the internet was thinking.

A friendship built on mutual respect

The playful exchange underscored the bond between two of the most accomplished women in sports. Over the years, Biles and Williams have forged a relationship rooted in admiration and shared experiences as pioneering Black athletes.

Back in 2021, Williams honored Biles in a TIME magazine tribute, calling her “a shining example of what success looks like.”

Since then, their connection has grown, with the two appearing together at the TIME 100 Gala and the 2025 Met Gala. Biles even met Williams‘ daughter, Olympia, during her 2024 Gold Over America Tour, a personal moment that showcased the depth of their friendship.

“There’s something poetic about the way Simone Biles moves,” Williams said. “She’s a master of precision, grace and dominance, and at the age of just 24, she has cemented herself as one of the most decorated American gymnasts of all time.

“But when she’s not on the mat or competing in front of the world, Simone strikes the powerful balance between humility and confidence, she’s enthusiastic yet stoic, believing in her strength, trusting her body and embracing her greatness. With a total of 32 Olympic and world championship medals, Simone’s athletic achievements are seen once in a lifetime.

“What she embodies truly reflects the endless potential of Black women. I wish I had her to look up to when I was younger and trying to realize my dreams.”
