There’s no denying that Ryan Garcia is one of the more polarizing personalities in boxing. His shine has worn off a bit in recent times, but it wasn’t too long ago that he was considered one of the best and most dangerous lightweight boxers in the world.
That notion seemed to get to his head, flinging him into a fast-paced lifestyle that saw his career nearly unravel. What should have been an epic night, when he defeated Devin Haney handily in April 2024, turned into a complete disaster. Garcia was suspended from boxing for one year due to a failed drug test.
The time off from the sport coincided with a concerning reliance on alcohol that Garcia has openly spoken about. It seemed like Garcia turned the corner heading into his May 2025 fight against Rolly Romero, but his rust showed up in the ring. Romero won easily by unanimous decision, putting Garcia’s career once again in jeopardy.
Ryan Garcia posts his negative PED drug test results on social media
The loss to Romero had fans wondering if Garcia simply isn’t the same boxer as he was when he was using a PED to beat Haney. Hoping to clear the air before his next fight, Garcia has taken matters into his own hands in order to prove he’s completely clean now: He published his latest VADA test results.
Garcia is preparing to fight against Mario Barrios on February 21. It will be a championship bout for Barrios’ WBC welterweight belt, which he has successfully defended twice in a row: with back-to-back draws against Abel Ramos and Manny Pacquiao.
If Garcia wins, it would be his first world championship victory. It feels crazy to say that he’s never won a world title, especially given how much star power he had not very long ago. Perhaps doing things the right way will pan out for King Ryan this time around.
