Carlos Alcaraz is still in cotton wool because of the injury to his right wrist that forced him to withdraw last week from the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell and to withdraw from the Mutua Madrid Open. The tennis player was seen on Monday in Madrid, on the occasion of the Laureus Awards, with a large splint on his right hand.
Alcaraz, in statements to TVE, has left in the air his participation in the next edition of Roland Garros (May 24 to June 7), a tournament where he is the defending champion. ” We’ll see. The next test is going to be crucial, so to speak. We are trying to do everything in our power to make that test go well. I’m trying to be positive, to be encouraged, with patience, although these days are getting long. I can’t give a deadline to return,” he says.
Roland Garros? We’ll see
According to MARCA, Carlitos has been using a splint to immobilise the affected area since last Friday, the same day he made his withdrawal from the Madrid Open official.
Ranking in jeopardy
Carlos Alcaraz, who is far from being able to defend his Rome crown, could lose 3,000 points if he does not go to Roland Garros. That would mean he would be left with 9,960 points before the start of the grass-court tour.
He will have to defend his Queen’s title (500) and Wimbledon final (1,300). Alexander Zverev is lurking behind the Spaniard and would be the big beneficiary of his long absence.
The precedent from two seasons ago
The current situation is increasingly reminiscent of the time he experienced with his right arm two years ago. In that case, he missed Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Rome, and played in Madrid with severe pain. He was in time then to win the first of his two titles at Roland Garros.
