The baseball world is in shock. The Puerto Rican national team, one of the historical powerhouses of the tournament, is seriously considering withdrawing from the 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC), which would create many problems in the organization of the traditional event.

The core of the team has been dismantled. At least eight players, led by Mets star Francisco Lindor, have not been approved by insurance companies to participate in the tournament, which begins in March.
In Lindor’s case, the rejection stems from minor procedures on his elbow, although the Mets are counting on him for a normal spring camp. This crisis is compounded by the forced absences of figures such as Carlos Correa, Jose Berrios and Victor Caratini.

The team’s operations manager, Joey Sola, did not hide his frustration at the lack of answers and the rigidity of insurance providers, calling the situation a low blow just days before payroll closes.
“Somehow, I think it’s a little unfair,” Sola said. “Who in the world would think that Lindor would not be on the list? Do you wait until the last weekend to give us an answer? Please.”
“It took us by surprise. You have players on other teams with injury histories who make $30 million a year who can play,” Sola explained. “Meanwhile, I have guys on my roster who are not guaranteed major league level, and they are turned down. It’s very hard to understand.”
