Former Puerto Rican boxer Prichard Colón has died at the age of 33, more than a decade after suffering the catastrophic brain injury that ended one of boxing’s most promising young careers. His father and former coach, Richard Colón, confirmed his death Thursday, August 13, saying his son was now “in a better place.”
Colón’s life changed forever on October 17, 2015, during his fight against Terrel Williams in Fairfax, Virginia. The previously unbeaten prospect received repeated punches to the back of the head commonly known as rabbit punches before later collapsing. Doctors discovered a brain bleed, and Colón underwent emergency surgery before spending 221 days in a coma.
The fight that changed boxing safety
Colón never returned to the ring, but his story became much bigger than his 16-1 professional record and 13 knockout victories. His family spent the following years documenting his rehabilitation as he worked to regain movement and communication, turning his recovery into an extraordinary fight outside the ropes.
His injuries also left a lasting mark on boxing safety. The WBC officially endorsed what became known as the “Prichard Colón Rule,” calling for zero tolerance toward punches to the back of the head.
Under the policy, referees are urged to act immediately against rabbit punches through warnings, point deductions and, when necessary, disqualification. The WBC has warned that blows to this vulnerable area can cause paralysis and catastrophic brain damage.
Colón entered professional boxing at just 20 years old after winning five amateur titles and quickly emerged as a major Puerto Rican prospect, beginning his professional career with 10 consecutive knockouts.
His championship dreams were taken away in a single night, but his name ultimately became attached to something even larger: a permanent reminder of why protecting fighters inside the ring can never be optional.
