Phil Mickelson may have missed the cut at Augusta, but the LIV Golf star still found his groove on a different kind of course. In a recent YouTube match filmed at La Jolla Country Club, Mickelson teamed up with golf content creator Grant Horvat to take on fellow pro Jon Rahm and NFL quarterback Josh Allen. What followed was a high-skill, low-stress 2v2 showdown full of friendly trash talk, pinpoint shots, and some seriously good vibes.
Each player hit their ball, but only the best shot from each team counted, raising the stakes while keeping the energy playful. As Mickelson stepped up for a tricky approach shot, Rahm and Allen sat nearby, soaking in the precision. “Phil’s calculations are so precise, it’s incredible,” Rahm noted. Allen chimed in with a grin: “He’s kind of a supercomputer.”
The roast heard around the green
While Mickelson impressed with his accuracy, it was Allen’s shot that truly stole the moment, landing just four feet from the hole. Mickelson, clearly impressed (and just a little annoyed), couldn’t resist the deadpan delivery: “That’s mad. I just wanna say, ‘F-k Josh Allen.’ He’s the nicest guy, and he does this sh-t.”
Rahm
didn’t escape unscathed either, with Mickelson adding, “Can I say, ‘F-k Jon Rahm, too?'” The insults were clearly in jest, but they highlighted just how much respect Mickelson has for both athletes.
A friendship that goes beyond the fairway
Allen’s admiration for Mickelson isn’t new. The two have shared moments off the course, with Allen once dressing as Mickelson for Halloween, complete with a visor and coffee tumbler. In fact, Mickelson even spoke to the Bills during the 2021 NFL season, offering mindset advice that resonated deeply with the quarterback. Allen credited the golfer’s wisdom for helping him find his focus, later leading the Bills to a win.
Their mutual admiration continued when Mickelson celebrated Allen’s $330 million contract extension on X, calling him “one of the best in the game.” It’s a bond built on respect, and the occasional on-course jab.
Will we see a rematch?
With chemistry like this, another round seems inevitable. Whether it’s golf or just good old banter, Mickelson, Allen, Rahm, and Horvat have found the perfect blend of competition and comedy.
