The Kansas City Chiefs have shown that their disappointing 2025 season is firmly in the rearview mirror, and much of that resurgence has a name and a face: Patrick Mahomes. The quarterback has regained the elite form that made him the face of the NFL before the serious knee injury he suffered last year.
Mahomes surprised the entire league by returning as the starter in the season opener against the Denver Broncos—exactly nine months after tearing his ACL against the Los Angeles Chargers last December.
With the Chiefs still undefeated at 3-0 after Sunday’s win over the Miami Dolphins, former All-Pro offensive lineman Kyle Long declared that Kansas City’s quarterback has reclaimed the throne as the best in the NFL.
“They’ve been talking about Kenneth Walker, they’ve been talking about Spags’ defense,” Long said on NFL Today on CBS. “I think about this guy right here, Patrick Mahomes. He spent every day of the winter, every day of the spring, every morning and day of the summer when everybody else was out playing golf and having fun, and he was getting his ass back in the lineup.
“Nothing happens without No. 15,” Long continued. “Week 1, what did we wanna see? We wanted to see if the knee was OK. Patrick ripped the Band-Aid off, dove headfirst down there at the goal line. He said, ‘Call off all the shots. All the doubters can take a nap.’ And this past week, what we saw from Patrick Mahomes was the greatest quarterback on our planet right now. And he’s back to being him. That’s what’s on my mind. The league is on notice.”
Mahomes leads Chiefs past Miami
Mahomes turned in another strong performance, completing 20 of 24 passes for 246 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in Kansas City’s road victory over the Dolphins.
It marked the Chiefs’ first road game of the season after opening the year with home wins over the Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts at Arrowhead.
Through three games, Mahomes has thrown for 812 yards, seven touchdowns, and just two interceptions—numbers that underscore Kansas City’s excellent start.
Chiefs aim to stay perfect in Las Vegas
Next up, the Chiefs will try to complete a perfect first quarter of the season when they visit the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 4.
The Raiders face the New Orleans Saints this Sunday. A win would leave them 3-0 and turn the matchup against Kansas City into a battle for sole possession of first place in the AFC West.
Kansas City had dominated that division for nine straight seasons before their unexpected 6-11 campaign in 2025. Prior to that stumble, the Chiefs had reached seven consecutive AFC Championship Games, appeared in five Super Bowls, and won three titles.
Mahomes was the driving force behind that dynasty and already owns two MVP awards. If he sustains this level of play and the Chiefs keep winning, the quarterback could once again emerge as one of the leading candidates for a third career MVP.
