Pat McAfee has cheeky response to viral smoking claims during ESPN show

Pat McAfee turned a potentially awkward viral moment into another example of the irreverent style that has defined his broadcasting career.

The ESPN host drew attention Thursday after a clip from his show circulated on social media and prompted viewers to speculate that he had been smoking marijuana on-air.

The video itself doesn’t clearly establish what McAfee was using, and there has been no confirmation that it was cannabis. That uncertainty did little to slow the reaction, especially because McAfee has previously spoken openly about his marijuana use.

“I smoke a lot of weed,” McAfee said during an earlier appearance on the “All the Smoke” podcast. “I do. I think that’s a massive piece of it for me.”

That admission gave viewers plenty to work with, but it still doesn’t answer what happened during Thursday’s broadcast.

McAfee answers speculation with one line

Rather than issue a detailed explanation, McAfee responded in the same loose, joking tone that has become central to his public persona.

“A little sage never hurt nobody,” he wrote on social media. “Also This Buffalo Bills team came out on fire in their new home.. just smokin’ the Lions in all phases,” he added after Buffalo’s 41-31 win over Detroit.

McAfee has leaned into similar ambiguity before. In 2025, he was seen using a pen during a live show and later described it as “CBD and Vitamins.”

That history helped fuel the latest speculation, although ESPN are yet to publicly commented on Thursday’s viral moment.

Latest controversy fits McAfee’s unconventional style

McAfee has become one of ESPN’s most recognizable football personalities since transitioning from his NFL career into broadcasting.

The former Indianapolis Colts punter built his audience by rejecting the polished style associated with traditional studio shows in favor of a more conversational, unpredictable approach.

That formula has made him hugely popular with supporters, while also making him a frequent target of criticism.

Some viewers objected to Thursday’s clip and questioned whether smoking anything on-air was appropriate. Others dismissed the controversy as overblown and consistent with the atmosphere McAfee has cultivated around his program.

McAfee didn’t appear especially concerned about the reaction. His “sage” remark suggested he was content to let viewers debate the clip without providing a definitive answer.

Unless McAfee or ESPN offers further clarification, what exactly was being used on-air remains uncertain.

What is clear is that another few seconds of live television were enough to put McAfee back at the center of the sports media conversation.
