Drama sparked around the WNBA game between Los Angeles Sparks and Dallas Wings, where Paige Bueckers registered an historic performance by scoring 44 points, a career record.
Despite Bueckers having an unbelieveable performance, the Wings lost the game 81-80, with Kelsey Plum securing it for the Sparks. This win was characteristic of the Sparks’ success, but also revealed the cracks in the Wings’ offense that have been persistent during the whole year.
Family came to show support
Tim Fudd, father of Azzi Fudd, and therefore, Paige Bueckers’ father in law, took to social media to share his hard opinions of the Wings’ performance. On X, he posted that the Wings were relying too much on Bueckers for points, and that the team lacked offense support while Bueckers’ talents were not being maximized.
He said it was extremely difficult to remove Bueckers from the court because of her dominance and her ability to score from almost anywhere. His point was aimed at while the Sparks have great players, the Wings need to have more offensive plans and options rather than expecting Bueckers to handle every single attacking play.
“Sparks/Wings….here’s the most obvious take…Wings need to find some offense other than PB5. Very hard to take her off the floor. Paige’s middy is automatic and from every crazy angle! IMO, the Sparks have nice pieces. Should be more consistent at this point in the season.”
The game must be played through Bueckers
Fudd even took it a step further by claiming that if he were the Wings’ head coach, all possession would be centered around Bueckers. He would have been happy with a system in which Bueckers does not only score but also assists her teammates many times, saying team should “let her set the table and feed you, or sit back and watch her work.”
What Fudd perspective referred to is that the Wings were not doing enough to take advantage of one of the league’s brightest young stars.
“If I’m coaching….we are gonna have a conversation in this timeout. Paige has to touch it EVERY possession. Let her set the table and feed you, or sit back and watch her work.”
A balanced style with Bueckers as main pillar
Meanwhile, Dallas Wings head coach Chris Koclanes admitted Bueckers’ talent but stressed a different style. He complimented her on having the confidence to play at her own speed and making good plays in tough times, adding the balance of letting Bueckers shine on her own while keeping a solid team strategy as well.
Koclanes was more moderate in his comments: while Paige is indeed a main pillar of the team, the Wings must balance their offense and team chemistry instead of running every play through one only performer.
The game itself represents a larger debate within professional sports: balance between individual talent and team strategy. Bueckers’ play not only made her a popular contender for the Rookie of the Year award, but also raised concerns on the Wings’ failure to offer depth and offense variety.
Family is never objective
Fudd’s criticism comes from a parent’s admiration for his family and the desire to see Bueckers’ ability being useful, as the coaching staff seek balance between power and cohesion.
Essentially, this is less of a feud than it is a war of philosophies: Fudd advocating for an offense with Bueckers as the centerpiece, and the Wings coaching staff wanting to combine star power with chemistry. An interesting convergence of family loyalty, public image, and professional sport strategy.
What will happen next is still unknown, but it is true that the combination of both arguments may be the perfect solution for a problem that is not as critical as it may seem.
