Dallas Wings (5-13) picked up their fifth win of the season by beating Washington Mystics (8-9) 79-71. However, star player Paige Bueckers had to watch the game from the sidelines due to a right knee injury.
In her previous game against Indiana Fever (8-8), the 23-year-old had 27 points and 6 assists in front of almost 20,000 fans that filled the American Airlines Center, in a game that ended in a 94-86 loss. In this game, Caitlin Clark could not be present due to her left groin injury. Even so, Fever took the win.
After the loss, the number one overall selection in this year’s WNBA Draft was asked about the performance of her rival. Paige, did not hide her opinion on the matter and answered:
They have great pieces throughout the whole roster…. They’re a complete team.
Bueckers also highlighted the performance of Kelsey Mitchell, who shined after Clark’s absence and scored a season-high 32 points.
Undoubtedly, Indiana got a big and necessary victory that relieves -at least a little- the pressure. Now they will try to achieve the same result in the Commissioner’s Cup final against Minnesota Lynx on July 1 at Target Center. And they’ll probably have to do it without Clark, as it’s still unknown if he’ll be able to play in the next game.
Injuries haunt Paige and Caitlin
The young Dallas star has missed five games this season counting her absence against the Mystics, and after sitting out three games due to concussion protocol and one more due to illness.
Clark, meanwhile, missed five games earlier this month after suffering a left quadriceps strain. Now, she adds two more after her new left groin injury against the Los Angeles Sparks and Dallas.
The Wings will return to action on Thursday, July 3 against the Phoenix Mercury at College Park Center. Will Bueckers return?
