After the disappointing fight in which Canelo Alvarez was the unanimous decision winner over Cuban William Scull, criticism, irony and mockery were not long in coming, and it was only a matter of time before it came from one of his biggest detractors, Mexican-AmericanOscar de la Hoya.
And to ‘hit him’ again the owner of Golden Boy Promotions not only spoke about the fight itself, but also used the fact that at the end the long-awaited fight with Terence Crawford was announced, which will take place on September 12 in Las Vegas, Nevada, under the umbrella of TKO, the new promotional company in which Turki Alalshikh and UFC boss Dana White are partners
Regardless of the fact that former IBF champion William Scull has declared himself the winner of Saturday’s fight in Riyadh, De La Hoya said that the fight was a fiasco, and emphasized that Alvarez was not able – or did not want – to reach the Cuban to offer a greater show, and that he only did what was necessary to be able to obtain the belt he lacked to be undisputed champion and arrive with that status.
This is how the Golden Boy reproached him: “They pay you all this money to fight a runner that we all knew was going to run, Cuban style. You chose him, and now you say you hate fighting runners“.
“Benavidez won’t run away like Scull”
And taking advantage of the trip, De la Hoya returned to a narrative that he does not want to let go, and that Canelo wants to bury at all costs, the one that forces him to look at a boxer who according to the great boxing analysts, would represent a challenge to the Mexican, David Benavidez: “We all know who we want to see you win against. That’s Benavidez. Face Benavidez, fight Benavidez. He won’t run away. What’s wrong with that? It’s a good fight, but it’s sad. You know, it also starts from the top,” he concluded.
