Oscar De La Hoya made a name for himself in his boxing days where he won the world title in six divisions where he built a legacy full of stellar victories over legends such as Julio Cesar Chavez, Arturo Gatti, Ike Quartey and Hector Camacho.

It was only after a decisive defeat to Manny Pacquiao in 2008, that De La Hoya retired from boxing and focused on the business side of the sport. Under the Golden Boy Promotions banner, he has achieved significant success as a promoter, albeit not without his share of controversy and public feuds.

One of his latest controversies has been with Edgar Berlanga after months of exchanges with the Puerto Rican super middleweight. The “Golden Boy” has issued what can only be described as a challenge, bordering on a threat when he shared a clip with the legend: “After the most gratifying night in @goldenboy history we have FOUR NEW STARS… Edgar Berlanga, I have a big surprise for you after all the crap you’ve been talking for a year hahaha. Please wear all the jewelry you have. I hope you try to slap me like you’ve been promising,” he said in the video, which seemed more like an audition for a Mexican-American gangster TV series.

Oscar de la Hoya puts pressure on Edgar Berlanga

It is not known if Edgar Berlanga will actually live up to his bold pre-fight claims, but one thing is clear: this drama heightens the excitement surrounding an already exciting showdown at Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens. Now, it’s time to see how he would react if El Elegido actually followed through on the slap he once promised. However, the more pressing question is: what exactly did Edgar Berlanga say to provoke this intense reaction from De La Hoya?

It was last year when Edgar Berlanga attacked Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya, who had been a vocal critic of the possible matchup between Berlanga and Canelo Alvarez. “Guys like Oscar De La Hoya are out there trying to destroy my reputation, destroying Canelo’s reputation, trying to say that we’re not going to sell tickets, that the PPV numbers… nobody’s going to buy them, that it’s not going to exceed 100,000. That’s bullshit, and if I see him, I’ll beat him up,” said the 23-1 boxer bluntly.

Edgar Berlanga’s response after a year of social media fights

However, Edgar Berlanga did not stop there. He mentioned that Golden Boy is upset with himself because he is already old and told him that he has resentment against Canelo because he is a real Mexican. “I know where his hatred towards him and me comes from, he wanted to sign me. He flew from Las Vegas trying to come from Los Angeles but he didn’t make it and I joined Eddie Hearn”. It is no secret that De La Hoya had been actively seeking Edgar Berlanga after the fighter parted ways with Top Rank in early 2023.

Now, the tension seems to be about to explode. And in response to De La Hoya’s posts, Berlanga has already fanned the flame by sharing a bizarre photo with De La Hoya in an attic with the message: “See you in New York”. Will it be a confrontation in New York? A challenge? A public maneuver?
