NFL season opens with a Super Bowl rematch: Which recent championship rematches delivered the most?

The NFL is officially back with all 32 franchises, some more than others, aiming to reach the Super Bowl, which this year takes place on Valentine’s Day, February 14th, at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

As is tradition, the league placed the reigning champion, in this case, the Seattle Seahawks, in the opening game of the campaign against the very opponent they dominated from start to finish in Super Bowl 60, the New England Patriots.

For fans in Seattle, it is a night to raise the championship banner, while for New England, it represents an early opportunity to wash away the memory of a suffocating defensive beatdown, aided by quarterback Drake Maye utilizing newly acquired weapons like wide receivers A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs.

This marquee matchup marks the first time since 2016, when the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers squared off following Super Bowl 50, that the NFL has scheduled an immediate championship rematch for Week 1.

Historically, Super Bowl winners hold an impressive 9-3 record when playing a rematch in the subsequent regular season, and this Patriots-Seahawks clash officially marks the 3th time two prior Super Bowl combatants have met in Week 1 the very next season.

In this opening-night showdown, the Seahawks will attempt to join the 2016 Denver Broncos as the only reigning champions to emerge victorious in a Week 1 title rematch. Keep in mind that the only other occurrence was when the Chiefs fell to the Vikings in their 1970 regular-season opener after beating them 23-7 in Super Bowl IV.

While early-season rematches are a rarity, the league has leaned into the trend recently, scheduling a championship rematch in each of the last four seasons. Last year featured the Philadelphia Eagles defeating the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 2, albeit in a tighter affair than their meeting in Super Bowl 59.

Prior to that, the Chiefs topped the San Francisco 49ers in Week 7 of the 2024 campaign after previously outlasting them in overtime during Super Bowl 58.

Looking back to 2023, the Chiefs dropped a tight 21-17 contest to the Eagles in Week 11, coming off their thrilling 38-35 offensive showcase in Super Bowl 57.

Across the last three years, the constant denominator has been Kansas City, a powerhouse striving to bounce back into the win column this season after suffering their first losing record since 2012.

Historic Classic Rematches and What Lies Ahead

Before this recent surge of cross-conference regular-season rematches, the previous Super Bowl repeat occurred in 2017, when the New England Patriots comfortably handled the Atlanta Falcons once more following Super Bowl 51 and Tom Brady’s legendary 28-3 comeback.

Going back to 2016, the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers delivered a nail-biter won 21-20 by Denver, serving as the last time a Week 1 opener featured a title rematch prior to tonight.

Historical precedent heavily favors the defending champion Seahawks walking away with a win, but as every football fan knows, nothing in the NFL is ever written in stone until the clock hits zero.
