Although the 2025 NFL season won’t kick off until the second week of September, players have a long period of pre-season practice.
Offseason workouts are designed to provide training, instruction and physical conditioning for players.
According to Article 21 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, each team’s official, voluntary nine-week offseason program is conducted in three phases:
- Meetings, strengthening and fitness, and physical rehabilitation
- Individual and group exercises
- Organized Team Activities (commonly known as OTAs).
During the second and third phases, contact is not permitted, but teams may conduct 7-on-7, 9-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills during OTAs.
Teams with a new head coach are entitled to an additional voluntary minicamp for veterans.
Any voluntary minicamp for veteran players must be held prior to the NFL Draft (April 24-26), but not before the third week of the club’s preseason practice program and after at least one week of the two weeks of Phase One activities that franchises may conduct in accordance with Article 21.
This year, five teams will hold voluntary veteran minicamps.
