NFL MVP’s wife joins backlash over Sydney Sweeney’s controversial sports ad

Kelly Stafford has spent years raising her four daughters in an environment where sports, fame, and digital influence increasingly collide. This week, the wife of Los Angeles Rams quarterback and reigning NFL MVP Matthew Stafford used another media spotlight to deliver a powerful message to younger generations.

The catalyst was actress Sydney Sweeney’s latest and highly debated campaign for sports prediction platform Novig. The Euphoria star sparked intense discussion after appearing nude alongside various sports-related props, opening a broader conversation about the sexualization of women and the use of provocative advertising in the social media era.

Stafford, 37, reacted strongly through her Instagram account. After sharing an analysis from influencer Daniel Hong — a father of two daughters — she backed his message with an emphatic all-caps response: “THIS, THIS, THIS, THIS.”

In the post shared by Kelly, Hong highlighted a fundamental distinction:

“Appearance can get you attention: likes, comments, followers, money, opportunities. All of that is very real. What I want them to understand is that attention and value are not the same thing.”

Wave of outrage in women’s sports

Stafford’s stance aligns with criticism voiced by several prominent figures in international sports. Olympic swimming champion Ariarne Titmus called the campaign “a kick in the face to every woman who has dedicated her life to perfecting her craft,” while Paralympic athlete Beatriz Hatz argued that women “deserve to compete at the peak of our ability and be seen as athletes.”

Former UCLA gymnast Gracie Kramer also joined the conversation by sharing images of herself competing with the message: “Idk what Sydney Sweeney was doing, but this is what a woman in sports looks like.”

Sweeney appeared to subtly respond to the wave of criticism by sharing images of historic athletes who previously posed for ESPN’s famous Body Issue. However, for Stafford, the discussion goes far beyond a simple photoshoot: it is a warning about the messages her daughters receive in a world where digital popularity increasingly tries to define personal worth.
