The second leg of the Champions League quarterfinals has been the talk of the town, not only because of Barcelona‘s elimination at the hands of Atlético Madrid (3-2 over two legs), but also because of a curious coincidence.

Hours later, in Brazil, Neymar imitated a gesture Lamine Yamal made during the match at the Metropolitano, drawing attention: coincidence or tribute?

Neymar imitated Lamine

During the first half of the match for a spot in the Champions League semifinals, Lamine not only opened the scoring for Barça but also starred in another moment that didn’t go unnoticed.

The young player sat on the ball near the corner flag while play was stopped because his teammate, Fermín López, was being treated by medical staff after taking a blow to the face when he collided with the Atlético Madrid goalkeeper while going for the ball.

This gesture sparked controversy, as while some saw it as a sign of calm and composure in the face of the match’s pressure, others criticized it.

However, hours later, Neymar copied the move from the young Barça star, creating an image that has already gone viral.

The Brazilian was the star of the show in the 1-1 draw between Santos and Recoleta in the Copa Sudamericana, a match that had it all: goals, spectacle, and controversy. Neymar opened the scoring just four minutes in after a quick play, though the opponent equalized. He was then criticized for his physical condition, to which the Santos idol responded by asking for respect and defending his commitment to the team.

Despite this, Neymar’s gesture of imitating Yamal was interpreted as a mere coincidence, since only a few hours had passed between the Barcelona and Santos matches, while others assumed it was a clear nod of solidarity between “idol and heir,” reflecting the close relationship and mutual admiration between the two.

The connection would not be surprising. Yamal has acknowledged on multiple occasions that Neymar was his greatest soccer role model, an influence that shaped his style from a young age, and even before the match, he expressed his desire to see him play in the World Cup with the Canarinha.

Thus, in a single night, Neymar combined spectacle, tribute, and controversy to star in a curious generational “back-and-forth” with Lamine Yamal.
