The Leo Messi effect has once again demonstrated its effectiveness with the Argentine’s arrival as owner of UE Cornella, a team that is a neighbour of RCD Espanyol in the city of Barcelona. Despite being a Tercera RFEF team (fifth division in Spain), the Argentine star’s modest team has already managed to surpass the historic enemy of FC Barcelona on Instagram.
In just a few days, UE Cornella’s account has soared to 565,000 followers, while Espanyol’s account has 549,000. This is a reflection of the call effect that Leo Messi can have on the club, which was acquired for a figure close to $2.5 million according to some reports. In just 24 hours, the account went from 2,000 followers to330,000 users. Three days later, the figure is already over half a million and promises to grow further.
The club’s coach, Ignasi Senabre, commented a few days ago on the importance of Messi’s arrival at the club. “It’s a feeling of happiness and pride. In the end, the best player in history has set his sights on the club. That is the merit of what has been done at the club in recent years. We are very excited, but with the focus on what we can control, which is what we are here for, we have to be professional,” he said.
One of the pillars of the project will be grassroots football, so that UE Cornellà can maintain and grow as a reference for the training of future top-level players, like those it has already produced throughout its successful history.
