Memphis Grizzlies center Zach Edeywas recently caught in a high-speed incident that’s made headlines, both for his excessive speed and the stern lecture he received from an Indiana State Police officer.
The 23-year-old, known for his 7-foot-4 frame and strong rookie season, was pulled over in May while driving 101 mph in a 55 mph zone in Tippecanoe County, Indiana.
According to police bodycam footage that surfaced in August, Edey told the officer he was heading to Purdue University, his alma mater, and claimed he only sped up to pass a slower car. That explanation didn’t sit well with the officer, who delivered a sharp and memorable rebuke.
“You know exactly why I pulled you over,” the officer said. “You were going 101!” She continued: “No, you don’t pass at 100! The road is 55. You were going almost double the speed limit!” The officer made it clear that while passing other vehicles is common, doing so at triple-digit speeds was dangerous and inexcusable.
“Eighty? OK. One hundred?! One hundred is not OK. Ever.”
Edey cooperated during the stop and handed over his license and registration. He was cited not only for speeding but also for reckless driving, a misdemeanor charge that could carry jail time. However, the officer chose not to arrest him at the scene.
“It’s a jailable offense. I’m not taking you to jail,” she said, telling Edey that the court would contact him later.
Legal outcome and NBA implications
On July 23, Edey struck a deal with prosecutors to resolve the matter. He pled guilty to the speeding charge and agreed to pay $639.50 in fines. In exchange, the more serious reckless driving charge was dropped. As of now, Edey has not publicly commented on the incident, and there’s been no official word from the Grizzlies or the NBA about possible disciplinary action.
The incident comes after a strong rookie season for Edey, who averaged 9.2 points and 8.3 rebounds over approximately 70 games, including playoff appearances. He earned All-Rookie First Team honors and quickly became a key figure in Memphis’s young core.
However, Edey is currently recovering from ankle surgery, which could impact his availability at the start of the 2025-26 NBA season. While his legal issues appear resolved, the video and public reaction serve as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with being a professional athlete, on and off the court.
