The Los Angeles Rams‘ preparations for the 2025 NFL season have been disrupted by an injury to starting quarterback Matthew Stafford.

Entering his 15th season, Stafford is managing an aggravated disc issue in his back, which has kept him out of all training camp activities.

According to reports from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, he has received an epidural injection and is considered “week-to-week,” although the organization expects him to be available by Week 1.

Despite public confidence from head coach Sean McVay regarding Stafford‘s recovery timeline, his extended absence has led the Rams to increase reliance on veteran backup Jimmy Garoppolo, who is currently receiving the majority of first-team reps during training camp.

Garoppolo, who signed with the Rams during the 2024 offseason, was initially viewed as an experienced reserve.

However, Stafford‘s continued unavailability has shifted Garoppolo into a more prominent role.

In recent joint practices, including sessions against the Dallas Cowboys, Garoppolo has drawn positive evaluations.

He demonstrated effective command of the offense and displayed strong chemistry with key receivers such as Davante Adams, Puka Nacua, and Tutu Atwell.

Head coach Sean McVay praised Garoppolo‘s performance, noting the quarterback’s accuracy and composure under pressure.

While the Cowboys‘ defense was missing key contributors during those sessions, Garoppolo‘s execution reinforced his readiness to start if required.

Garoppolo, who turns 34 this year, brings postseason experience and a record of efficiency.

He previously led the San Francisco 49ers to multiple NFC Championship appearances and served as a capable starter for nearly a decade.

In his lone start for the Rams during the 2024-25 season, he threw for 334 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception, statistics reflective of a prepared and experienced quarterback.

Strategic Implications for Los Angeles

The Rams originally positioned Garoppolo as a third option behind Stafford and a potential high-profile acquisition that did not materialize.

However, his decision to remain in Los Angeles, reportedly over more lucrative offers elsewhere, suggests both confidence in the organization and a willingness to contribute in a critical role.

As Stafford continues his recovery, Garoppolo now provides the Rams with an immediate contingency.

With second-year quarterback Stetson Bennett also on the depth chart, McVay and his staff appear more inclined to trust a veteran presence under center during this transitional period.

CBS Sports recently identified Garoppolo as the top “underrated candidate to start games in 2025,” citing both his past success and the current uncertainty surrounding Stafford‘s health.

His leadership, familiarity with high-stakes situations, and low turnover rate position him as a stabilizing factor during a pivotal stretch in the preseason.

Although the Rams remain optimistic about Stafford‘s return, the situation has emphasized the strategic value of experienced depth at the quarterback position.

Garoppolo‘s readiness has ensured continuity within the offense and mitigated potential disruptions ahead of the regular season.

As the Rams pursue postseason ambitions, the flexibility and preparedness of their quarterback unit may prove essential to their success in 2025.
