There are moments that don’t need explanation. They just come, they are felt and they change everything.
This is what Marta Suarez experienced on Monday, April 13, on a night she had been waiting for and which, when it finally arrived, did not unfold exactly as many had imagined.
The 2026 WNBA Draft not only marked a starting point in her career, but also represented the point where years of training, decisions and personal bets found an answer in a single moment.
And that moment came
Her name was called with the 16th pick, the first pick of the second round, by the Seattle Storm. A selection that confirmed her place in a generation that is beginning to take shape in the league and placed one of the promises of Spanish basketball on the stage she was looking for.
But the story did not end there, because minutes later everything changed.
Marta Suarez was included in a trade that sent her to the Golden State Valkyries, along with a future 2028 Draft pick, in a move that ultimately redefined her first step into the WNBA.
The dream was fulfilled, but destiny was not.
That’s when the night stopped being just a celebration and became something else: the beginning of a story that began to move even before he stepped on the court.
Because getting here was not immediate.
From her first steps in basketball in Spain, through her training at the Siglo XXI High Performance Center, to her development in the U.S. collegiate system, where she went through programs such as Tennessee, California and TCU, her path was built on perseverance and adaptation.
And now, all that comes together in a new starting point.
The 2026 WNBA season is not just any other season. It marks the 30th anniversary of the league and an expansion that changes the competitive landscape, with new franchises entering the scene.
An interesting start
Suarez already has a date in mind: May 8, when the Valkyries visit the Storm at Climate Pledge Arena. A first game that, without looking for it, will also have something of a reunion.
Because the team that chose her first will be the first to face her.
What began as the most anticipated night of his career ended up becoming something more complex.
Not just about fulfilling a dream.
But in understanding that sometimes that dream begins to take shape in ways that cannot be controlled.
At that point, Marta Suarez not only made it to the WNBA, she began to write her own story within it.
