Mahomes’ New Weapon: Why Chiefs offense looks unstoppable heading into matchup against the Dolphins

Kansas City’s offense has spent years forcing defenses to choose between bad options, but Kenneth Walker III may have added another one.

The Chiefsenter Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins at 2-0, and their early-season attack already looks more varied than it did a year ago.

Patrick Mahomes is still the centerpiece, but Walker’s production through two games has made it much harder for opponents to devote all their attention to the passing game.

Walker has carried 47 times for 290 yards while adding nine receptions, giving Kansas City a runner capable of setting the tempo rather than simply complementing it.

That matters because Miami now has to decide how aggressively it wants to defend the box.

Walker gives Kansas City true early-down weapon

Locked On Chiefs host Chris Clark believes the run game should be central to Kansas City’s plan, with Walker potentially seeing around 20 carries if the game develops that way.

The logic is straightforward. If Miami commits heavier personnel to slowing Walker, Mahomes gets cleaner opportunities against the secondary. If the Dolphins stay light, Walker has already shown he can punish poor tackling and create explosive gains.

Miami has used heavier fronts and base personnel to defend the run, according to Locked On Dolphins host Kyle Crabbs, but that approach creates its own risks against Mahomes and Travis Kelce.

Walker’s ability to break chunk plays makes the decision even more difficult. He produced four explosive runs in Week 1, including a 60-yard touchdown, and is averaging 6.2 yards per carry through two games.

Chiefs no longer relying on one source

Kansas City’s improvement goes beyond Walker. Kelce has already ripped off a 59-yard reception after topping out at 44 yards on a single catch last season.

Tyquan Thornton made two critical explosive catches against Indianapolis, including a 30-yard gain on third-and-12 in overtime that helped keep the Chiefs alive.

Rashee Rice also delivered four catches for 83 yards in that victory, averaging 20.8 yards per reception. That variety is what makes the offense particularly difficult to prepare for.

Mahomes can attack deep, Walker can control the ground game and Kansas City’s receivers are beginning to generate chunk yardage from several different spots.

Miami cannot afford to let Kansas City dictate game

The Dolphins’ biggest challenge may be preventing the Chiefs from staying ahead of the chains.

Consistent early-down success would allow Kansas City to mix play-action, quick throws and explosive shots while keeping Miami’s pass rush from controlling the tempo.

Walker has effectively given Mahomes another answer before the ball is even snapped.

Kansas City travels to Hard Rock Stadium on September 27 for its first road game of the season, and Miami will have to solve more than the quarterback who has defined the Chiefs’ offense for years.

The problem now is that the run game may be just as capable of forcing the defense to adjust.
