With just over half of the third quarter still to play, the Los Angeles Lakers were already completely overwhelmed by the Oklahoma City Thunder. The score stood at 90-58 on a night when the Lakers had no answers against the defending NBA champions and potential NBA Playoffs opponent.
But the loss wasn’t the worst part for Los Angeles.
It was the Luka Doncic injury.
The Lakers’ superstar, who had just finished one of the greatest months of his career in March – averaging 37 points and 7 assists – was forced to leave the game after feeling discomfort in his left leg during the NBA regular season matchup.
What Injury Does Luka Doncic Have?
There is still no official diagnosis, but all signs point to a possible muscle injury in his left leg, potentially a hamstring issue. Doncic pulled up while driving to the basket and immediately felt sharp pain in the back of his thigh as he planted his leg.
The Slovenian star went down visibly in pain and did not return to the game.
What concerns Lakers fans and the organization most is the timing: the NBA Playoffs are just two weeks away. Los Angeles has already clinched a playoff spot, but could face a tough first-round series against teams like the Houston Rockets or Minnesota Timberwolves.
The Lakers are also fighting to hold onto the third seed in the Western Conference standings, and any extended absence from Doncic could cost them home-court advantage in the opening round.
There’s another important detail: Doncic played his 64th game of the season. The NBA award eligibility rules require a minimum of 65 games to qualify for major individual honors. If he misses the remainder of the regular season, he could be ruled out of All-NBA and MVP consideration.
Although the injury does not appear to be severe, the timing is critical. With the playoffs so close, the Lakers may choose to be extremely cautious and hold him out until the postseason.
Doncic will undergo further evaluation on Friday to determine the exact extent of the injury.
