Luka Doncic may have only just arrived in Los Angeles, but all signs point to him wanting to stay. The Lakers superstar is reportedly ready to commit to a new contract extension once NBA rules allow him to negotiate beyond his current deal – and that time comes on August 2.

Doncic is currently signed through the 2025-26 season, with a player option the year prior, but a new extension would keep him in purple and gold even longer. While he’s not eligible for a “supermax” contract because the Lakers didn’t draft him or acquire him within his first four seasons, he can still secure a massive payday – up to $268 million over the next five years.

The big question: how long of a deal will he choose?

There are three contract options on the table, each offering a unique blend of flexibility, security, and earning power.

Option 1: The One-Plus-One

This shortterm deal would give Doncic control. He’d commit only to the 2026-27 season, with a player option in 2027-28. This route allows him to reassess the Lakers’ situation – and his own value – sooner, but it comes with more financial risk.

  • Potential Total: $149 million
  • Free Agent Again: Summer 2027

Option 2: The Two-Plus-One

The smart money move. Doncic could time his next free agency to coincide with his 10th NBA season – when he becomes eligible for a 35% max salary rather than the current 30%. This puts him in prime position for a record-breaking deal down the line.

  • Potential Total: $207 million
  • Free Agent Again: Summer 2028

Option 3: The Three-Plus-One

This is the safe play – the full bag. Doncic would lock in through 2029-30, with a player option at the end. If he’s confident he’s in LA to stay, this contract maximizes his earnings and gives the Lakers a clear signal of commitment.

  • Potential Total: $268 million
  • Free Agent Again: Summer 2030

With training camp around the corner and the Lakers positioning themselves as championship contenders, Doncic’s decision will shape not just his future – but the franchise’s as well.

Stay tuned: come August, all eyes will be on Luka and the ink he’s about to put to paper.
