There’s no doubt that Trey Lance is one of the biggest failed projects in San Francisco 49ers history. In 2021, the Niners traded three first-round picks and a third-round pick to the Miami Dolphins to move up 9 spots in the draft and select the quarterback, who was considered a great talent at the time, and there were high hopes for him.

In the end, he turned out to be a failed project. Between injuries and the strong performance of Brock Purdy, Trey Lance didn’t last long with the 49ers franchise and after a couple of years, he was traded to the Dallas Cowboys for a fourth-round pick.

With the Cowboys, he spent a couple of years. In 2023, he hardly played, and in 2024 his playing time was minimal, although he had the chance to start in the final regular season game against the Commanders, completing 20 of 34 passes for 244 yards. However, he was unable to stick with the team.

Trey Lance arrived at the Chargers and is competing incredibly

After everything that happened, it was expected that Trey Lance’s chances of retirement were high-there was even talk of going to the Canadian league. However, at the last minute, an opportunity arrived with Jim Harbaugh and the Los Angeles Chargers, and Lance hasn’t wasted it.

Trey Lance has done a very good job in two preseason games. In both games combined, he completed 13 of 20 pass attempts for 120 yards and 2 touchdowns, and added 48 rushing yards and 1 rushing touchdown in the preseason. Because of this, NFL analyst Louis Riddick left an important message on his X account

The clear starter for the Chargers is Justin Herbert, no doubt about that, but Trey Lance is doing a good job competing with Tyler Heinicke for the QB2 spot. Furthermore, several NFL teams in need of a quarterback could be watching his performances closely.
