Since the creation of the Leagues Cup, the aim has been to strengthen the ties and relationship between Liga MX and MLS, especially with a view to the 2026 World Cup that will be hosted by Mexico, the United States and Canada.

Although the Leagues Cup has also had changes throughout its history, as it began with only four teams and by 2025 it will have 36 participants.

This year’s edition of the Leagues Cup returns with a revamped format with the aim of providing a better spectacle for fans, so the duels between Liga MX and MLS will be more intense in the quest to crown a team. Therefore, in MARCA we present the most attractive and unmissable matches for the international tournament in 2025.

Attractive Leagues Cup 2025 matches

Each club, whether from Liga MX or MLS, will play a total of three matches against opponents from the opposite league, in order to guarantee the greatest number of matches between the two leagues in this Leagues Cup

The Leagues Cup will offer us very attractive matches in its first stage, the Group Stage, with some reunions.

  • Pachuca vs San Diego: It will be the match that pits Hirving ‘Chucky’ Lozano against the team that saw him grow up, so it will have a great deal of interest.
  • Toluca vs Columbus Crew: The current champions of Liga MX against the current Leagues Cup monarchs will meet in this thrilling encounter.
  • LA Galaxy vs Cruz Azul: The MLS champions take on the region’s top team, the Celestes, who conquered the Conca.
  • Inter Miami vs Pumas: In addition to seeing Lionel Messi in action, it would be a new clash against Keylor Navas, with whom he already coincided.
  • America vs Portland Timbers: It will be the clash that could define the Eagles’ passage to the next round in search of lifting a title.
  • Chivas vs New York Red Bulls: A renewed Chivas team will look to compete in this Leagues Cup with Gabriel Milito as coach.

Leagues Cup 2025 will debut new format

On this occasion, the Leagues Cup, in addition to reducing the number of teams, will have a different format to have more matches between Liga MX and MLS.

They will be divided into two conferences: East and West, where it will be a table in which points will be added (three for a win, two for a win on penalties and one for a loss on penalties), until each team has played three matches.

Subsequently, the four best teams from each conference will advance to the next round, where they will face each other in Liga MX vs MLS matches again and will be played in a single match until a champion is crowned.

The Group Stage of the 2025 Leagues Cup will be played between July 29 and August 7, while the Quarterfinals and Semifinals will be played in midweek from August 19 to 27, ending with the final on August 31.
