Another offseason, another retirement drama surrounding Aaron Rodgers. Once again, the veteran quarterback has everyone on the edge of their seats waiting for his decision. The difference this time is that the Steelers aren’t just waiting for him; they already have Kirk Cousins as a potential replacement.

For the past two years, the 21-year veteran has taken his time evaluating his future. In 2025 alone, he had the Steelers waiting almost until the last minute to sign him.

This year, however, Pittsburgh isn’t willing to wait that long. According to Sports Boom insider Jason La Canfora, “The team is working to procure other options at quarterback in the meantime.”

As La Canfora pointed out, the quarterback market is starting to settle, and the Steelers don’t want to be left without options. That’s why they’re targeting veteran Kirk Cousins.

Cousins fits the Steelers’ philosophy

Despite only starting eight games in 2025 with the Atlanta Falcons, La Canfora believes Cousins would be a good fit for the game plan of Pittsburgh’s new head coach, Mike McCarthy.

Cousins is a quick learner, performed much better in the second half of the season with Atlanta, and is now fully recovered from an Achilles injury that marred much of his time with the Falcons.

He noted that the four-time Pro Bowler still has power in his arm, “and has been a stalwart in play action under center throughout his career, a staple for Pittsburgh offenses.”

Moreover, Cousins could help second-year quarterback Will Howard continue to develop, while also giving the Steelers a chance to compete for the playoffs.

The Steelers remain focused on the postseason

The 14-year veteran is coming off two years with the Atlanta Falcons, where he put up solid numbers after replacing Penix due to injury:

  • 166 completions on 269 attempts
  • 61.7% completion rate
  • 1,721 yards
  • 10 touchdown passes
  • 5 interceptions

Pittsburgh, meanwhile, just acquired wide receiver Michael Pittman from Indianapolis to team up with DK Metcalf, giving either Rodgers or Cousins a formidable arsenal in the backfield.

With Cousins in their sights, Rodgers’ decision becomes less relevant, and the Steelers will be ready when training camp begins in July.
