Julio Cesar Chavez was once again in the spotlight, but this time outside the ring. During his participation in the “Lunes de Cafe” of the World Boxing Council (WBC), the “Great Mexican Champion” spoke without filters about the legal situation facing his son, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., who is currently under investigation for alleged links to organized crime.

“If my son were a drug trafficker, I would put him in jail myself, that’s for sure,” he told the media bluntly. With these words, he made his position clear and ruled out any relationship of his son with illicit activities, ensuring that those who know him know that he is not involved with any cartel or arms trafficking. “Everyone who knows my son Julio knows perfectly well that he is not linked to or belongs to any cartel,” he said.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fights against addictions and prepares to return to the ring

The former world champion also acknowledged that his son has faced problems with addictions, a subject he did not shy away from and which he confronted from his personal experience:

He has had addiction problems, yes, definitely, just like me. But he is struggling right now with that, he has been clean for a year now

In addition, Chavez himself confessed that his son’s return to the ring is part of a plan to keep him focused, away from addictions and surrounded by discipline. “I want him to have three or four more fights and retire,” explained the former boxer, making it clear that it is not a sporting streak, but a way to sustain his recovery.

Chavez talks about the context and rumors: “In Culiacan you can’t deny a greeting”

Julio Cesar also referred to the social context of Culiacan, the city where his family lives and how this influences public perceptions: “We live in Culiacan, we know all the people, and it is impossible that you deny the greeting to those people because you know how you are going to go. What do you want, friends or enemies? But being friends does not mean that he is a criminal,” he explained.

He also reiterated his confidence in the judicial system, trusting that the process against his son will be resolved according to the law: “We trust the authorities… everyone knows him, and knows perfectly well”. For him, the situation his son is facing is the price of fame and media exposure that the Chavez family has experienced for decades.
