The New York Yankees are facing a major dilemma at shortstop, but the answer may have come in the form of newcomer Jose Caballero. While youngster Anthony Volpe is dealing with a nagging injury and an offensive slump, Caballero has taken the opportunity to prove that he is the perfect solution to the problem.

Jose Caballero takes his chance

Since replacing an injured Volpe, Caballero has performed exceptionally well. The player has battled a solid 6-for-18, with two doubles and a home run, but it has been his play in the field that has really impressed.

With above-average defense, Caballero made a fantastic diving play to save a run and has a strong arm that allows him to complete plays smoothly. Despite joining the team just over a month ago, the former Ray has proven to be a reliable shortstop.

Aaron Boone is satisfied

Manager Aaron Boone had nothing but praise for his new player. While he acknowledges that Caballero has made a couple of mistakes, the manager is willing to take those small risks because of the confidence and fearlessness with which he plays.

“He plays with a lot of confidence,” Boone said, suggesting that Caballero’s boldness is more valuable than his occasional mistakes. For his part, Caballero maintains a humble approach, stating that he does not care about his individual achievements as long as his team continues to win.

Anthony Volpe’s situation

There is no confirmed return date for Anthony Volpe. In fact, Aaron Boone has said that his return is a decision that will be made “day to day” as he does not want to take any risks.

As the Yankees gear up for the stretch run and the postseason approaches, the plan at shortstop remains unclear. However, what is clear is that Caballero has established himself as a solid and reliable option at shortstop, providing a much-needed solution for the team at just the right time.
