Seve Ballesteros, Jon Rahm’s constant reference point in each of his goals, must have been very proud from above of the man from Barrika’s penultimate shot in the third round of the British Open, in which he carded the course par, 70 strokes.
The Spaniard, who has lost six kilos in the last eight months, had to play on his knees to get the ball out of the bunker to the left of the green where it had landed with his second shot. He struck it masterfully and left the ball a meter from the hole.
“It’s not easy. It was hard to start the way I did, but the next 17 holes were good, although I couldn’t make a putt, though I didn’t really create any clear chances either. I lacked that run of two or three birdies in a row that gives you rhythm. After the mistake on 1, I set myself the goal of being on the tee at 6 at even par, and I did it,” he said afterward.
Jon isn’t losing hope. “I wouldn’t say I’m giving shots away, but the margins are small. There won’t be much room for mistakes tomorrow, although it’s quite windy. It’s all about the start. If you begin three or four under par, which is possible, it’s possible.”
He thanked Fleetwood for sharing the round and was grateful that the World Cup final was not an England-Spain one. “They would have shot me down for three days,” he joked. “Even though my English is good, I can’t understand a word they say. And if they’ve been drinking, even less so. If I don’t win, I’d like Tommy to.”
