In a pattern that constantly pushes Cowboys fans to the edge of desperation, Jerry Jones has done it again. At The Star, the highest-rated and most effective kicker in the NFL, Brandon Aubrey, is still present.
However, it is uncertain how long that will remain the case, because with the way the Cowboys’ owner and general manager operate, anything can happen. At any moment, the kicker could receive a better offer next summer and end up leaving the franchise with the Lone Star.
For now, Aubrey remains with the team, but it is not unreasonable to think that a better offer could arrive that would make him seriously consider leaving the organization to secure his financial future, and frankly, he deserves it.
Brandon Aubrey could become the most desired jewel in the NFL
The Cowboys’ phenomenal kicker, who has managed to deliver huge kicks from extremely long distances and possesses unique accuracy, still has not signed a significant contract extension.
Cowboys placed the second-round, $5.76 million tender on kicker Brandon Aubrey, per source. Aubrey can now sign an offer sheet with another team that the Cowboys would have the right to match. If they don’t, they will get back a second-round pick.

Rumors suggested that the team would offer a tremendous contract, making him the highest-paid player at his position across the entire league. But since that has not happened yet, Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker continues to hold the top spot in that category, averaging a salary of $6.4 million per year.
During the NFL Combine, it was being said that Aubrey could eventually earn $7.5 million annually, which would immediately make him the highest-paid kicker in the entire league. Since that has not happened yet, questions have naturally emerged regarding what could happen with the player.
Brandon now has two clear options in front of him. The first is to play this season with the Cowboys under the $5.76 million tender for 2026. The other possibility is that another franchise could step forward and present him with a multi-year contract.
If that latter scenario takes place, the Cowboys would have the option to match the offer, which would keep him in Dallas but with an improved contractual situation. However, if the team decides it is not interested in doing so, then he would depart, and Dallas would receive a second-round pick as compensation while the kicker moves on from the franchise.

Free agency will begin this coming March 11, 2026, at 4:00 pm ET, and many teams will surely attempt to pursue the kicker by offering extremely lucrative deals to convince him to join them.
This is where Jerry will have to do a great deal of convincing to ensure that his player remains with the team so they can continue staying competitive heading into the season that will begin in September of this year.
