It’s clear that the 2025 NFL season was very tough for the Kansas City Chiefs, their worst since 2014, and the truth is it wasn’t surprising. Ever since they were crushed in Super Bowl LIX by the Philadelphia Eagles, the Chiefs had shown signs that something wasn’t right, and a year later it was confirmed.
In addition, the AFC West became more competitive with the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers. We can set the Raiders aside because right now they are among the worst teams in the NFL. However, the Chiefs simply couldn’t respond and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014, while also surrendering the division crown for the first time since 2016.
Kansas City finished with a 6-11 record, the franchise’s worst mark since 2012. The most noticeable issue was the offensive stagnation: they ended the year ranked 21st in the league in points per game, something unprecedented in the Patrick Mahomes era, where they had consistently displayed explosive production.
Patrick Mahomes needs weapons, and the New York Giants could indirectly help with that
Beyond all the offensive struggles, the toughest moment of 2025 came when Mahomes suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during the Week 15 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers on December 14.
According to reports, Mahomes is working hard in rehab and aims to be ready for Week 1. With Xavier Worthy currently his only true weapon, the Chiefs could give their quarterback a gift in the upcoming Draft. In the latest mock draft from The Athletic’s writers, Kansas City is projected to select Ohio State standout wide receiver Carnell Tate with the ninth overall pick.
In several mock drafts, Tate has been projected to the Giants with the fifth pick. However, The Athletic slotted safety Caleb Downs to New York, which makes sense given it is a real team need. Even head coach John Harbaugh mentioned his interest in the Ohio State defender. If that happens, Carnell Tate could slide in the Draft and become the perfect gift for the Chiefs.
Mahomes would be thrilled with that selection and could return to being an explosive quarterback, something he lost in 2024 and, of course, in 2025. Carnell Tate nearly reached 900 receiving yards in his final season at Ohio State and recorded nine touchdown receptions.
