Jannik Sinner experienced one of the strangest moments of the 2026 Rome Masters after a violent and deafening noise suddenly shook the tournament venue while he was inside the stadium facilities. At first, Sinner had absolutely no idea what was happening.

The world No. 1 was walking through the hallways of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Rome, when an enormous roar suddenly echoed through the building. Because he was indoors, he could not see what was happening in the sky above the venue, making the moment even more alarming.

Sinner instantly froze

The Italian star looked around in confusion, briefly lowered himself instinctively as if trying to protect himself and appeared unsure whether he should move, stop or look for cover while the deafening sound continued overhead. Sinner had no idea what was happening in the sky directly above the venue.

The noise was later confirmed to have come from military fighter jets flying over Rome as part of a Frecce Tricolori aerial operation tied to national celebrations in Italy. But inside the facilities, the moment felt completely different.

Unlike fans outside who could actually see the jets crossing the sky, Sinner only heard the violent sound shaking the structure around him. Many online even joked that, for a brief second, the Italian looked like he thought something dangerous was happening because of how sudden and aggressive the noise felt.

The moment arrives while Sinner continues dominating the Rome Masters. The Italian advanced to the quarterfinals on May 12 after defeating Andrea Pellegrino and tying Novak Djokovic’s record of 31 consecutive Masters 1000 victories.

He is also chasing history in Rome

Sinner is attempting to win the Rome Masters for the first time in his career, which would complete his Career Golden Masters and make him only the second player after Novak Djokovic to win all nine ATP Masters 1000 tournaments.

And while the Italian continues to look nearly unstoppable on the court, for a few unexpected seconds in Rome, the noise coming from above left him confused and unsure of what to do.
