Jake Paul opened up about the aftermath of his fight with Anthony Joshua, describing the pain from his broken jaw as feeling “like there’s a baseball inside it” after being battered in Miami last Friday.

On brother Logan Paul‘s Impaulsive podcast, recorded the day after the bout and released on Tuesday, Paul reflected on the six rounds in the ring that left him with a jaw broken in two places.

He revealed he underwent surgery following the fight, having four metal plates inserted, and previously disclosed that he lost some teeth during the procedure. “I was doing good, I just think my cardio, just the mental pressure of the big guy and sparring the big people is different on the 10 ounce gloves. But it was a great experience, I learnt a lot in there,” he said.

During the interview, Paul paused, struggling to speak: “I can’t really f***ing talk.” He also admitted that he regretted not incorporating altitude training into his preparation, which he believes would have improved his cardio.

Preparation regrets and recovery

“I should have gone to altitude training,” Paul said. “I wish I had more than three weeks I think, to prepare. To put on more muscle. I should have gone to altitude training, that was my biggest mistake. I just needed to have that extra level of cardio for this and that can only come from altitude.”

His mother, who appeared on the podcast, noted that Paul‘s conditioning was further impacted by being sick for 10 days during training camp. Despite the setback, Paul maintained a positive perspective on the experience.

“In fairness to Paul, he didn’t seem to want to draw attention to that too much in the way other fighters have after losing a bout,” a source close to the podcast noted. “He did have fun. I love this sport and I love this job, it doesn’t even feel like a job. This sport has done so much for me.”

The 28-year-old also confirmed that he plans to return to boxing once fully recovered and has no desire to retire. “It’s like there’s a baseball in there,” Paul said. “Four titanium plates. It’s literally snapped, bro, completely snapped.”

He recalled the moment Joshua landed the right hook that ended the fight in the sixth round: “I was like ‘wow, that was nice.’ I was on the ground like ‘that was a good shot.’ He surprised my jaw. I mean, it’s not that hard to get your ass beat.”

Earlier on Tuesday, Netflix announced that 33 million viewers tuned in from around the globe to watch the fight in Miami, highlighting the enormous draw that Paul still commands despite the loss.
