Boston Red Sox rookie right-hander Hunter Dobbins made it clear before his first start Sunday against the Yankees that he would never like to play for the New York team. Boston and the Bronx Bombers split the first two games of their current series.

On the one hand, New York took the first game on Friday with a 9-6 victory, and the Red Sox tied the score with a 10-7 victory on Saturday. The final game of the season will be played at Yankee Stadium on Sunday, where Dobbins will make his first official on-field contribution to the rivalry.

Hunter Dobbins admits he’d rather retire than join the Yankees

“My father was a die-hard Red Sox fan,” Dobbins said, according to the Boston Herald. “And I’ve said it before: If the Yankees were the last team to sign me, I would end my baseball career,” he reiterated.

“I wasn’t attached to any team, but I grew up watching the Red Sox, and I think, out of contempt for the Yankees, I watched everyone but them,” Dobbins added. And regarding his least favorite Yankee, Dobbins admitted it was practically everyone.

The three-game series kicks off the past Friday and will be the first meeting between the Red Sox and Yankees this season. Boston comes into this game after losing the series to the Los Angeles Angels, while New York rebounded from a tough series loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers last week by beating the Cleveland Guardians this week.

This Sunday, Carlos Rodon will be looking for his ninth win of the season with the Yankees, while Hunter Dobbins is looking for his third on the mound for the Red Sox. Additionally, Aaron Judge hopes to get the Yankees fans back on their feet with another home run.
