Tiger Woods has been one of the most recognizable figures in sports for decades, known for his dominance on the golf course and a personal life that has often drawn intense public attention.
Today, the 15-time major champion is reportedly in a relationship with Vanessa Trump, the former wife of Donald Trump Jr.
But long before Woods became one of the greatest players in golf history, he experienced a relationship that ended in dramatic fashion during the early stages of his career.
According to the book Project Tiger: The Birth of Genius and the Price of Greatness by author Gavin Newsham, Woods‘ first serious relationship with his childhood sweetheart, Dina Gravell, came to a sudden and painful end in the mid-1990s.
The two reportedly dated for around four years when Woods was still a rising amateur golfer. At the time, he was building a reputation as one of the sport’s brightest young talents while competing in elite collegiate events.
Their breakup occurred during the 1995 U.S. Intercollegiate Golf Tournament in Palo Alto, California. Woods had entered the tournament but was forced to withdraw due to injury.
A breakup that came without any warning
While Woods dealt with the injury during the tournament, Gravell was reportedly staying at the team hotel. According to the account in Newsham‘s book, she received a call from the front desk informing her that her belongings had been packed up.
When she returned to the room, she discovered that everything had been boxed up along with a letter written by Woods.
The message made it clear the relationship was over.
“Dina,” the letter began, explaining that Woods and his parents no longer wanted contact with her. The letter also stated that he believed he had been “used and manipulated” by her and her family during the relationship.
Woods concluded the message by wishing her well in the future and asking that a necklace he had previously given her be mailed back to him. He also wrote that she should not attend the tournament the following day because she was “not welcomed.”
For Gravell, the sudden nature of the breakup reportedly came as a shock.
The story reflects how intense the environment surrounding Woods‘ early career had already become. Even before turning professional, expectations for his success were enormous, and decisions surrounding his personal life were often influenced by the people closest to him.
Woods‘ father, Earl Woods, later discussed his son’s early relationships in a 2002 interview with the British newspaper The Observer.
Earl suggested that concerns about Tiger‘s future and potential financial success influenced how some people approached relationships with him.
“They had determined that Tiger was going to make a lot of money,” Earl said during the interview. He believed some people around the young golfer were already thinking about long-term security because of the wealth and fame they expected him to achieve.
Earl explained that as a parent he faced a choice in how to handle the situation. He could have forbidden his son from seeing Gravell, or he could offer guidance and allow Tiger to make his own decision.
Ultimately, he chose the second approach.
“I could counsel him and then wait for him to grow and determine what was right for himself,” Earl said.
That decision eventually led to the end of the relationship, marking an early and emotional chapter in Woods‘ life long before he became a global superstar.
Since then, Woods‘ personal life has remained closely followed by the public, but his legacy continues to be defined primarily by his achievements on the course, where he remains one of the most influential players in the history of professional golf.
