Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s post-retirement career has generated headlines for blockbuster exhibitions and lucrative business ventures.
Now, however, the undefeated boxing legend finds himself facing another legal battle that could complicate his future plans inside and outside the ring.
According to a complaint obtained by Mike Coppinger of The Ring, promoter CSI Sports has filed a lawsuit against Mayweather seeking $4.65 million in damages tied to alleged breaches of agreements involving planned fights against Mike Tyson and Manny Pacquiao.
“Floyd Mayweather was sued Thursday as promoter CSI seeks repayment of $4.65 million in advances paid to the boxer for a two-fight deal to face Mike Tyson and Manny Pacquiao, according to a complaint obtained by The Ring’s Mike Coppinger.
“CSI is seeking an injunction to block Mayweather’s exhibition scheduled to take place in Greece on June 27th against Mike Zambidis.”
The lawsuit centers on CSI’s claim that it secured exclusive rights to organize a pair of high-profile exhibition events involving Mayweather.
The first was expected to be a showdown with former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, followed by a rematch against longtime rival Manny Pacquiao.
According to the complaint, the promoter advanced millions of dollars to Mayweather as part of the agreement.
CSI alleges that while those contracts remained active, the former world champion began pursuing separate deals with other entities, including a proposed Pacquiao event and an exhibition against Greek fighter Mike Zambidis.
The dispute comes at a time when exhibition boxing remains a major business.
Although Mayweather officially retired from professional competition with a perfect 50-0 record, he has continued to participate in exhibition events around the world, drawing large audiences and substantial paydays.
A legal battle that could impact future fights
CSI argues that Tyson’s reported hand injury merely postponed their planned event and did not terminate the contractual relationship.
As a result, the company claims Mayweather remained bound by exclusivity provisions that prevented him from booking other exhibitions before fulfilling his obligations.
The promoter is now asking a federal court to stop the upcoming Zambidis event while simultaneously seeking repayment of the money it says was advanced to Mayweather.
If a judge grants the requested injunction, the Greece exhibition could face postponement or cancellation while the legal process unfolds.
Such a ruling would not determine the final outcome of the lawsuit, but it could significantly strengthen CSI’s position.
Veteran boxing journalist Dan Rafael has also reported that fallout from the lawsuit may already be affecting business relationships connected to Mayweather’s comeback plans.
Rafael stated that DAZN may have removed the Zambidis event from its schedule after being notified of CSI’s claims.
He also reported that Ticketmaster was no longer handling ticket sales after receiving notice of the dispute.
“A few things I’ve learned in reading the CSI suit (34 pages) vs. Floyd and speaking to those involved, Netflix is out of the Floyd-Manny rematch. They want the fight in September, but Floyd’s contract with CSI is clear: the Tyson fight must come first, and that is contemplated for September.
Floyd’s people also sent CSI a termination letter claiming their deal is void even though he has received more than $4.5M in advances,” Rafael wrote.
The mention of Netflix is particularly notable. Reports of a potential Mayweather-Pacquiao rematch had gained attention partly because of the possibility of a major streaming platform becoming involved.
The original 2015 fight remains one of the most financially successful events in boxing history, generating enormous pay-per-view numbers and global interest.
Meanwhile, Pacquiao previously suggested that Mayweather had already committed to certain aspects of a future event and accepted financial advances related to the project.
The lawsuit arrives amid several other legal and financial challenges surrounding Mayweather.
Recent reports indicate that prosecutors have filed felony charges involving allegations of theft and passing a check with intent to defraud. Separate reports have also detailed tax-related issues and civil disputes involving unpaid services.
For now, Mayweather’s most difficult fight may not be taking place under bright lights in front of a packed arena.
Instead, it appears the boxing icon could be headed toward a lengthy courtroom battle that may determine whether some of his biggest proposed exhibition events ever become reality.
